Rtyc san francisco
Peter and Pat Cunningham arrived in time for the first race and watched every race, dined with us at all the dinners, attended all the social activities and gave us great advice and encouragement, as well as significant financial support. My girlfriend Cecilia and James Fox's wife Glenda attended the regatta too and cheered us all on which is of great value and very encouraging. Together with Emily our chef, and friend, there were always supporters out on the water inspiring us to do our best.
It was a great effort, this is not just popping down to Cowes for the afternoon. Flying to Newport and taking a week off work is a big deal.
Whilst they all had fun I have no doubt that their support inspired and focused the crew probably more than any of us realised at the time. We were a team not just of the 11 sailors but of the nine supporters too, the RTYC were a team of Day 5. A beautiful day without a cloud in the sky, but sadly without a zephyr of wind on the sea either.
The fleet put up their battle flags and motored round Newport Harbour and all the marinas and yacht clubs honoured us with three gun salutes. The crew members stood proudly to attention on the port side of the 20 strong fleet representing 13 nations from five continents and 20 of the finest yacht clubs in the World. One has to hand it to the American's they do the razzmatazz really well, it was fun.
The whole fleet parade around Newport Harbour. Race After a frustrating and tense three hour wait for the wind to fill in, the hard-pressed race committee finally got the fleet away in a reasonable knots and JG delivered a shockingly good start, he even impressed the crew!
JG really does deserve enormous praise for his brilliant helming. Between him and his wife Katie their time and distance run ups to the start line were just as good as Ben Ainsle's in the Americas Cup if not better - Ben Ainsle only had one other boat in the way, JG had Katie and John Greenland. Congratulations to Ian on his 7th place in a fleet of Katie was strong minded and absolutely determined to hit the left and the Royal Cork YC in 4th place and I nervously backed our tactician - well you have to!
We were gunning for 2nd place, we were after Larchmont and so were The Royal Canadian YC who engaged them in a match race. We moved up from 3rd place at the top mark to 2nd place halfway up the 1st. The Royal Canadian YC and Larchmont YC were buried in the middle of the fleet and it looked like we might steal 10 points off each of them We will never know how the NYYC Invitational Cup would have ended after the 11th and 12th races had been played out because as we reached the leeward mark the wind died in the space of a minute to nothing and we finished the Invitational Cup un-rounding the leeward mark, drifting backwards out of control, with JG looking more than a little anguished.
After an agonizing ten minutes, that seemed more like an hour, the NYYC fired a volley of cannons signaling abandonment of race 11, sailing for the day and the end of the Invitational Cup.
And so we didn't move up to 2nd or 1st - well not this year anyway, but we did secure 3rd place and the "Resolution Trophy" which is awarded irregularly at the discretion of the flag officers of the NYYC to recognise outstanding achievement from foreign clubs.
Our rib crammed with our flag officers and supporters, roared over to celebrate with the team. The Future. I could not possibly have asked for more from any of my fellow team members or from any of the supporters that came with us to Newport. This was a club effort and a team effort, we were properly prepared, properly financed and we practiced - did we practice!
I am thrilled to have been asked to maintain the momentum, keep the team together, keep entering major international regattas on behalf of the club and return to Newport in where the RTYC will defend the Resolution Trophy and stage a full on assault at bringing the Invitational Cup back to 60 Knightsbridge, London SW1. Your support and enthusiasm will play an invaluable part in helping to achieve that aim. We will be planning fundraising events and inviting members of the club to meet the team and join the Patronage at gold, silver or bronze level.
The details will be published in the near future. As I said to the competitors, organisers and supporters at the prize giving dinner and ball. I will leave the maths to you. See you in ! Member Login.

The stated objective of the NYYC is "to promote the highest form of Corinthian sportsmanship in national and international yachting forums and yacht racing competitions" and their biennial Invitational Cup is their flagship regatta.
Twenty of the world's top yacht clubs were invited by the NYYC to send a team of 11 amateur sailors, with at least 9 of them being club members of their club, to race matched Swan 42's. Racing was over eight days and encompassed twelve 90 minute races with no discard. With no room for error - this is brutal competitive sailing at its absolute peak. All the sails were the same age, and only used for this event, rigs were set and sealed by the NYYC at the same tension and electronics were limited to boat speed and wind direction.
The whole fleet was scrubbed on the eve of the regatta only. This is one design racing at it's purest form. The regatta was raced over windward leeward courses in Newport Sound and Nagarsarret Bay. The NYYC race committee excelled even themselves, setting fantastic courses with the racing reinforced by superb on the water umpiring.
