Eddie married Carolyn in and they had three sons, Christian, Nicholas and Nathaniel. Eddie's community involvement began as an 18 year old, when he became secretary of the Redland District Strawberry Growers Association. He was also chairman of the Queensland Fruit Growers Cooperative for many years and chaired the Redlands Strawberry Festival for more than five years.

In addition, Eddie served as president of the Redlands Asthma Awareness Group and was also a director on the board of the Queensland Asthma Foundation. Alex in particular was the guiding force in the Junior levels of cricket as a coach and administrator of many of the Cleveland Thornlands sides.

It was through their efforts that the clubhouse and cricket field complex at Henry Ziegenfusz Park was developed. This division comprises a zone covering the Brisbane Bayside region, Eastern suburbs and the Redlands district. BEARS primary goal is to promote the game of cricket across the zone specifically catering for junior cricket from affiliated clubs and schools.
